If you’ve enquired about installing solar and received a quote that seems to be a great deal, be very wary.
How do some solar companies offer systems at such a cheap price?
What does it mean for you?
There are a few main reasons why you can get cheap solar quotes.
- The system comprises cheap imported solar panels, which can also be rebadged under a major brand name to give the impression they are quality products. In some cases, these panels can be 75% cheaper than panels sourced and approved for use in Australia. Be wary, these panels won’t be as efficient, produce less power and degrade faster over time, which costs you money in the long run.
- They are a high volume, low margin installer who install systems as quickly as possible with no after-sales service or support. What happens when there is a problem with your system? Who do you contact? This can cost you more money by having to pay an electrician or solar company to rectify any issues.
- Your system will be installed by untrained installers, simply approved by an electrician after the job has been completed. In these cases, a trained electrician may have to approve 10 installations in a day, and is under constant pressure to approve them all regardless of the quality. How long will this system last?
By taking the cheaper upfront cost, you can actually be costing yourself more money over the next few years in repairs and replacements.
Just remember, if it sounds too good to be true – it usually is!
